The Challenge

The Customer is a leading quantitative investment management firm that manages assets for high net worth individuals globally, including corporate and public pension plans, foundations, endowments, and sovereign wealth funds. The Customer was running SAP (Sybase) ASE 12.5, and a backup server using SAP (Sybase) Replication Server v12.6 for “warm stand-by”. Being on older database versions, the Customer experienced problems of scalability, speed, and data performance challenges. They decided to migrate to the latest SAP ASE 16.0 database, and also upgrade and configure their backup server to SAP Replication Server 15.7 for “warm stand-by”.

Because of mLogica’s extensive SAP database expertise, the Customer approached us to conduct the database migration and server upgrade. The mLogica team ran a complete assessment and analysis of the previous database and server, and collected configuration and database details so they could provide holistic solutions for the upgrade.

The Solution

The mLogica team presented the Customer with a complete step-by-step approach of the upgrade process that included:

  • The assessment based on the existing configuration to conduct the overall upgrade project
  • Testing and confirming server and database (source and target) availability, connectivity and access for 1 Production and 2 Non-Production database servers (a total of 3 database servers)
  • Setting up and configuring new ASE 16 servers and transforming 800 SPs from ASE 12.5 to ASE 16.0
  • Setting up warm standby replication between 1 Production and 1 DR server using Replication Server 15.7
  • Assisting with User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and then, with Production Cutover
  • Cloning the non-production databases from the upgraded database
  • Providing an installation run-book for future Sybase installations and upgrades

The Benefits

Once the server upgrades were completed, the database environment was thoroughly tested for quality assurance by running test and use cases. This was then provided to the Company with full access to relevant functional, technical, and business resources with adequate skills and knowledge to support the performance of services.
